5th Sunday in Lent
In today’s gospel we are reminded forcefully of the readiness of God to forgive sin.
The lesson is not that sin is unimportant but that God in His goodness extends pardon to the sinner.
Lent is an invitation to take a closer look at our lives,
acknowledge our weaknesses
and start anew in the friendship of God.

Choir At 10:30 Mass: Due to other commitments Jean Roman is retiring from her position as Choir Director for 10:30 Mass. Many, Many thanks to Jean for leading us with beautiful music over the past several years and for all the time and effort she put into this music ministry.
We now need someone to take over the music ministry at 10:30 Mass. The School choirs are absolutely wonderful.  Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could have some of these children sing at Sunday Mass.  If anyone has any interest or input please see Fr. Gillis.

Explanation of yearly expenses included in monthly bulletin reports:
Our regular yearly expenses averaged out over 12 months now comes to $4055.61 (based on 2009). Included in that total are things like Cathedraticum (a percentage of our parish income from regular donations (roughly 10%) that goes to support the Archdiocesan Administration), heating costs, insurance, property taxes, envelopes, Priests Benefit Fund, Priests and Lay Health plans, Convocation and Priests retreat, and the parish share of funds committed to the Hospital Foundation by the Archdiocese. Food for thought… It cost Holy Name over $16,000 to heat our buildings in 2009.  Watch for the Parish Financial report in the bulletin in late April.

Chrism Mass in the Year for Priests

Each year, during the Chrism Mass, priests renew their commitment to Priestly Service. This year, as we celebrate the year for priests, this renewal of promises takes on a special significance. This special jubilee year, which marks the 150th anniversary of the death of St. Jean Vianney, the Cure of Ars and patron of Priests, is meant to “deepen the commitment of all priests to interior renewal for the sake of a stronger and more incisive witness to the Gospel in today’s world”.

For this reason, I want to invite you in a special way this year to participate in the Chrism Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, as a sign of your appreciation for the gift of the ministerial priesthood and to support our priests as they seek to respond to the Holy Father’s call to interior renewal for the sake of the gospel.

A monastery in the English countryside had fallen on hard times, and decided to establish a business to defray their expenses, such as a bakery or winery.
Being English, however, they decided to open a fish & chips restaurant.
The establishment soon became very popular, attracting people from all over.
One city fellow, thinking himself quite clever, asked one of the brothers standing nearby,
“I suppose you’re the ‘fish friar’?”
“No,” answered the brother levelly, “I’m the ‘chip monk’.”
