Blessing of the Food or Blessing of the Easter Baskets is one of the most enduring and beloved of polish traditions on Holy Saturday. Baskets containing a sampling of Easter foods are brought to Church and blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is traditionally lined with a white linen or lace napkin and decorated with Easter evergreens. Special pride is taken in preparing a decorative and tasteful basket. The foods in the basket also have a symbolic meaning; eggs symbolize life and Christ’s Resurrection, bread symbolizes Jesus, salt symbolizes purification, horseradish symbolizes the bitter sacrifice of Christ and ham symbolizes great joy and abundance.  The blessed food remains untouched until Sunday morning.
