FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 19,  2004
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Accompanying people who are faced with uncertainty, intimidation or unfair treatment shows solidarity and ensures respect for people’s rights.   In many communities, victims who must deal with the court system are accompanied by representatives of support groups.  Internationally, numerous organizations send teams of volunteers to stand beside returning refugees, human rights defenders and others threatened by political violence.  The very presence of such witnesses can deter abuse and be a sign of strength and support.   We can all use the unconditional love and support that comes from being accompanied on life’s journey. How reassuring, then, to know that the one we wait for during this Advent season also goes by the name Emmanuel - God with us.

LAST WEEK THE SUPREME COURT issued a decision in reference to marriage.  This week the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops published a statement: “The Catholic Church will continue to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage as the union of a man and a woman......affirming that marriage is a loving, life-giving partnership between a man and a woman.  Its purpose is the good of the couple and the procreation and education of children - and thus necessary for the survival of society.  As the committed and stable relationship of a man and a woman, marriage is basic to the stability of society and family life.  In so far as it is a social institution, marriage is concerned with the common good, not individual rights......As pastoral leaders of the Catholic community in Canada, we intend to be part of the debate (regarding future legislation), We encourage all Canadians to participate in the forthcoming debate in any way that they can and to made their views known to their representatives in the House of commons and Senate.
