FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
November 21,  2004
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In a world where violence and injustice often are used to dominate, how do we find meaning in a feast that can seem all about triumphalism?  As we witness kingdom states and nations with weapons of mass destruction kill off smaller ‘kings’ to become superpowers, what does the oft-repeated prayer, “For yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory,” really mean to us?   Today’s gospel shows us a different kind of king:  Jesus, the “King” of the Jews, being crucified.   And, even then, he was being taunted to use His ‘kingly’ powers: “Save yourself and us!” In the reading from 2nd Samuel, David is anointed king of Israel, Jesus was of David’s lineage, but His message was about the new ‘kingdom’ of God, the new reign of a discipleship of equals, not a kingdom of power over others.   We see the essence of Jesus’ new reign in the reading from Colossians: “we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”  Jesus’ message of truth challenges us to move away from any triumphalism related to this feast.
