25th  SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME
September 19,   2004

Jesus came as a prophet, siding with the poor and bringing them Good News, doing everything He could to alleviate their suffering.  He also knew that He had to protest and denounce strongly the insensitivity of those who make money and wealth their main goal in life.  The gospel is Good News.  But it is also demanding - it accepts no compromise - money should not be deified.  Money, wealth, economic growth, profit, consumerism have become the new gods of our time.  Money cannot be the main goal in life - one cannot serve God and wealth.  But above all, one cannot serve the God of Jesus and of the prophets, and not serve the poor.
