Two disciples met a stranger on their way to Emmaus and begin updating him on recent events in Jerusalem. And what events they are: a prophet, a crucifixion, a missing body, angels!  The stranger rebuffs them for their lack of vision and spends the rest of the walk reviewing the history of God’s People from Moses to Jesus, complete with scriptural references and two thousand years of prophecy.  Enthralled, the disciples ask the stranger to stay in Emmaus- He accepts, and  blesses and breaks bread with them - it is clear now - He is Jesus!
The two can hardly wait to tell the others - their tongues rejoice and in today’s liturgy we’re still hearing the echoes.   Their hindsight gives us insight into the ordinary events of our lives, into the presence of the Lord in the strangers with whom we walk.
