EASTER SUNDAY
March 27, 2005

Love, not mystery, plays the greater role in today’s reading about resurrection.  Mary, who loved Jesus so much, was the first at His tomb.  She looked for Him after the disciples left.  Love allowed her to recognize the risen Lord.  John, the disciple whom Jesus loved and who loved Jesus, was the first to believe in the resurrection.  He was the first person to understand and believe because he loved.  We also know, because John tells us, that the resurrection events are an expression of God’s love for us and for the world.  Today the gospel says that if we are to understand and believe the resurrection, the path to both is love.  To understand the mystery of resurrection, we must be in love with the One who is the heart of that mystery.  We must see it with the eyes of love.
