1st  SUNDAY OF LENT
February 13h  2005
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
LENT has begun - we are asked to take up the challenges of meaningful penance as expressed in  FAST & ABSTINENCEABSTINENCE (after 14) means not to eat meat or some other favourite food & a practice of moderation in all food & drink on all FRIDAYS of the year. FASTING (after 18 & up to 59) can vary from person to person - some a total fast, taking only bread & water; others adopt a vegetarian diet on a day of fast; others still take only one complete meal.  Lent is a time of repentance - a time for more prayer - a time of discipline and sacrifice  - a time to be generous and caring to the poor.   Remember that every Friday in Lent -  Stations of the Cross at 6 & Mass at 6:30 pm  - see the bulletin for changes.

February 9, 2005
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

 “The renewal of the Church in America will not be possible without the active presence of the laity. Therefore, they are largely responsible for the future of the Church."
Ecclesia in Amenca (44)

    I have often quoted the above statement of Pope John Paul II from his exhortation, Ecclesia in Amenca. I also included it in my Pastoral Vision for the Archdiocese of Kingston because I strongly believe that it is in our local parish communities that we will live out this call to renewal If this renewal is to be as effective as possible, the Church must offer the necessary tools to assist the laity in the organization of parish and diocesan activities.

     The Pastoral Vision calls for a laity that will be involved in many roles and ministries in the life of the parish. It is vital, therefore, that structures be put in place to assist the laity with their emerging roles and to help them understand their responsibilities. It will also be important for all the faithful to understand that clear boundaries are vital for the protection of ordained ministers, volunteers, paid staff and especially the most vulnerable - that is, the young, the elderly and the disabled.

    To address these issues, the Bishops of Ontario mandated a Screening in Faith initiative for parishes across Ontario. This program is an excellent volunteer and staff management tool. it will help offer clarity, structure and order to parish volunteer activities, as well as increase the safety and quality of the ministries and programs we offer. Screening in Faith is a visible sign of the Church's support in helping the laity with its vital role of Church renewal.

    Last October and November, introductory workshops on the Screening in Faith 10-step process were held in all four deaneries to give parish priests and their representatives some basic information on the initiative. Parish priests were then asked to select candidates for parish screening committees to be trained in the new year. In February and March 2005, these parish screening committees will receive the first phase of their training. Once members are fully trained, they will ensure that all volunteers within the parish are appropriately screened. It is expected that these committees will have the necessary tools in place to begin this process by spring of this year.

    I wish to express my thanks to the Office of Risk Assessment, to priests, deacons and to all the members of the Parish Screening Committees. A program such as this is not easy to initiate, but it is critical for all of us. I am grateful to everyone who participates in making this process an integrated part of our parish structure.

Sincerely in Christ,

Anthony G. Meagher
Archbishop of Kingston
